This is Sammy. His tribal name is Nmunba. The Samburu tribe is related to the Maasi, and are as elegant and glamorous as the Maasi. Sammy told me that if I saw him in his warrior garb at his village I would never recognize him. He has a Western education and works in security at the lodge.
Sammy told me a story about when he was a young boy, herding goats by the river. Nomally the goats would have been in pastures, but drought drove them to the grassy riverbank. As he watched, a crocodile snatched one of his goats. Sammy leapt into the river to save the goat. A ferocious battle ensued, during which the crocodile dragged him & the goat through the water, killing the goat, and stripping Sammy naked. Nonetheless, Sammy prevailed, killing the crocodile and salvaging enough of the goat so it could be eaten by the family, not the crocodile. He told this story with charm and modesty: a simple tale of fulfilling his duty as a warrior.
